Stand 3: Mental Toughness in the Workplace - Training and Coaching – Anna Golawski

  • A good deal of debate on stress has focussed on the working environment and its impact on employees. This is an important area for attention, but it is also true that it is possible to place two individuals in the same working environment and notice that one succumbs to the pressure of stress and another may thrive!
The difference between the two can be described as “Mental Toughness”. This explains how individuals develop resilience and an inner drive to succeed. Mental Toughness emerges as a key component for individual and organisational performance.
  • Applications and research shows that Mental Toughness is closely linked to:
    • Performance – explains up to 25% in the variation in performance
    • Behaviour – more engaged, more positive, more “can do” attitude
    • Wellbeing – more contentment, better stress management, less bullying
    • Aspirations – more ambitious, prepared to manage more risk
  • Mental Toughness has clear applications for people who work in organisations subject to stressors, pressures and challenges. It is invaluable as a management development tool to help people identify to be more effective in areas or their work and show people how to cope with stressors. It helps identify aspects of an organisations culture and can be used as an assessment tool in recruitment and selection to ensure a better fit in a critical area for job performance.
  • Anna is a proven, sought after and highly effective coach, using powerful business and personal coaching skills. She specialises in coaching for education, corporate and not-for-profit sectors and is a business mentor for the Prince’s Trust. Stand 20: Hydrotherm Massage – Rick Stone (Location: Cuckmere Hall)

  • Hydrotherm is a very relaxing form of massage that differs from other types of massage in that it is carried out with the client lying face up on two cushions that are filled with warm water, heated to between 30-40 degrees. This ensures the whole of the client’s back is in contact with the heat and is ideal for those who find lying face down uncomfortable.
  • The therapist works between the client’s body and the cushions. This means the pressure is upwards rather than downwards and so works against the body’s weight.
  • The water supports the body and the heat from the water enables tight muscles to begin to relax before the massage even starts. The system is designed to give perfect spinal alignment whilst in this position.
  • Hydrotherm is suitable for all ages and it is particularly suitable in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Hydrotherm can be useful in the context of medical conditions such as MS, ME, arthritis and muscle strains, as well as helping with postural correction.
  • Rick Stone is the Director of Stones Hydrotherm Clinic, and its chief massage therapist. He is a highly experienced massage therapist. For the last seven years he has been specializing in Hydrotherm massage and is part of the National Training Team working with some of the top physiotherapists in the country: introducing Hydrotherm into hospitals such as Stoke Mandeville which is home of the National Spinal Unit. Rick has also introduced Hydrotherm into Headley Court, the MOD Rehabilitation Centre. He also provided Hydrotherm Massage services at Champneys Forest Mere and with several Chiropractic Clinics in the South of England.
  • Special offer: Rick is offering Southdowns staff a special price for a Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage for £20 (usual price £28) or a Full Body Massage for £35 (usual price £52).
